Former Ghosts is a sort-of powerhouse of lesser known stars in the indie music world, comprised of This Song Is A Mess But So Am I's creator Freddy Ruppert, Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart, and Zola Jesus's Nika Roza. Normally, when a group is comprised of members of other bands who excel in their own rights, things can get a little watered down or big-headed, but nothing like that occurs within the confines of Former Ghosts. The music is intensely thought out and even easy to listen to, which is something to say when considering the music these folks have made on their own. The group has a full-length record set to come out some time this year on Upset the Rhythm Records, but for now, there are three current songs on the group's Myspace page. You own it to yourself to check out these songs.
Pitchfork posted the Peter Glantz and Nick Noe Lightning Bolt documentary The Power of Salad, which chronicles the band's 2001 tour of the country. If you aren't familiar with the band or haven't seen the film, I would suggest watching the film in its entirety on Pitchfork (you have until this coming Friday). If you don't walk away from the film inspired, wanting to listen to, see the band, or make your own music, you might want to reconsider your life. The film was released in 2003 but features tour footage from 2001, and still feels as relevant as ever. A good deal of music often sounds like the time it was created in, but Lightning Bolt's music stands the test of time in the best way. the band is set to tour again in 2009 after a break from playing live and they have another record coming out this year (supposedly), so this year will be good, to say the least.

There's more to come from us as far as SXSW coverage, but all of our photos have been uploaded and are in the browser above for your viewing pleasure. They are ordered from Saturday backwards because the best stuff happened at the end of the week. Have a look around and re-live the week with us or just live it for the first time. We had the best time and would like to thank everyone who made everything possible. You guys really knocked it out the park this year. Everything you see in the photos above was taken at a free show and we almost got to see everyone we wanted to see without paying a dime for any of it. It's a pretty incredible concept. Anyway, enjoy the photos and we'll see you next year.

SXSW was everything we had hoped for and then more. It was incredible to see so many great bands, many of them multiple times, and soak in the entire experience once again. We walked away with 11+ gigs of photos and will be spending a good deal of time this week narrowing those down to the useable ones and then you will get to check out all of our coverage as soon as possible. Stay tuned kids!

Randy Randall and Dean Spunt aka No Age will be stopping by No Comply Skate Shop, which is located at 812 West 12th Street right by the ACC Rio Grande Campus. Things are supposed to kick off at 3 pm tomorrow. All the bands will be playing on the roof of the shop which might not be such a great idea, but we will just have to see for ourselves. At least we might have the chance to say we saw No Age fall through the roof of a skate shop, right?

One of the coolest pre-SXSW shows you're likely to find, Tejas Means 'Friends', will be taking place at one of the best venues for this sort of thing in about 30 minutes. Located in the back of Ms. Bea's, a little bar on the East Side at 1104 E. 6th Street. Here's the info on the show:
The thing sounds fun, and as always at Ms. Bea's, its all free and all ages so there's nothing stopping you.

SXSW kicks off this Wednesday (officially) and we thought we would hit you with an update of our Guide To A Free SXSW. We've taken the liberty of adding a few new shows to the list to complicate your selection process. Also, if you scroll to the bottom of the list, there are some tips on our preferred way to get around and how to eat and drink for free. Soak it all in and get ready for this week because it is going to be an epic one! The guide now has shows starting as soon as Tuesday night so get out there and have fun!

Here's a set of SXSW posters for you to browse through. Some of you might not like to read through all the text involved with the crazy SXSW lineups and shows, but posters may do the trick for you. Browse through the set and pick out some good ones, because these are all worth going to. Some are free and some are major showcases, but they are all worthy of your attendance.

SXSW coverage have been relatively easy for us with accommodating rides, wristbands for access to the official showcases, and an overall ease of things, but this year is all different. We aren't going to have the luxuries of previous years, but this year seems like it is going to be more fun thanks to the challenges we are being presented with. I will be biking from my apartment to the venues everyday which means free transportation and with no expensive piece of plastic around my neck or wrist, I'm going to have to work around the big name showcases and catch all the free stuff, which isn't going to be much work at all (we'll see how I feel about that statement after SXSW week is over). To help you out in your quest for all the best free shows at SXSW, we have (with the convenient help of Showlist Austin) compiled our personal favorites in a handy PDF for your downloading and deciphering pleasure.

(p.s. Since the festival is still about a week and a half away, we will be updating the listing when we get updates, so let us know if you see anything we haven't covered)
