The Grizzly Life's Top Albums of 2009

The end of the year is here and we're glad. This year has been a good one but 2010 looks like it is going to be even better. Here's our take on the year's releases. Keep in mind that its nearly impossible for our small outfit to keep up with everything, so this is not comprehensive by any means, but keep in mind that our #1 album would still be #1 even if we'd heard everything.

#1. Former Ghosts - Fleurs
This album is remarkable in a lot of ways. In it, Freddy Ruppert's lyrics explore the gamut of a relationship with the clarity and brevity of both a well-seasoned lyricist and someone who has lived the words exactly. And he has. In talking with Ruppert, you get a complete sense of sincerity, something that has been missing from music lately. He doesn't fluff anything up beyond the necessary and writes pop songs that anyone can relate to. With the help of Xiu Xiu's Jamie Stewart and Zola Jesus's Nika Roza, the album takes on both of their styles and incorporates them in a way that perfectly melds their talents together. There is complete agony and there is light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel hope that is needed to cut the dark moments. The songs can make you cry, dance, and cry again because someone out there knows exactly what you're feeling. It's the most beautiful, well-done album I've heard all year.

#2. The xx - xx
#3. Lightning Bolt - Earthly Delights
#4. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
#5. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
#6. Fever Ray - Fever Ray
#7. The Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
#8. Girls - Album
#9. Cold Cave - Love Comes Close
#10. Bill Callahan - Sometimes I Wish We Were An Eagle

Two People Arrested After Attempting to Fight Jay Reatard

I wake up this morning, check my Facebook, and a friend of mine has recounted last night's festivities at the Jay Reatard show I missed and the end result does not come as a surprise.

According to Austin 360:
While the set had all the makings of a fun night of pop-punk, it was sadly abridged at only 40 minutes — less than the opening performance by Austin’s own Harlem — after two rowdy fans attacked Reatard on-stage shortly after he announced he was playing the night’s final song. He retaliated by swinging his microphone stand and departed mid-song, giving the at-times rambunctious audience the finger as he exited the stage. There was to be no encore — the lights went up and the PA music kicked in as the two intruding fans were arrested by police outside the club’s Sixth Street entrance.
Who knows what motivated these guys, but whatever it was, but I'm just surprised they thought they might get away with something. Just sit back and enjoy the show. If you didn't like the performance, leave, don't fight someone! Let's hope he keeps coming back to Austin and takes this as an anomaly.

Tonight : Jay Reatard w/ Harlem @ Emo's and Kimya Dawson @ Mohawk

Jay Reatard will be hitting Austin this evening with a newly minted band and that same old attitude you've come to love (or hate). If you've been cooped up inside in a pile of blankets and need to get out to keep yourself from going crazy, or if you just need a place to go crazy, tonight's show at Emo's will probably get the job done. Austin's own Harlem, freshly signed to Matador, will be opening the show.

If you need to mellow out because life has been a little too hectic, there's always tonight's Kimya Dawson show at Mohawk. You'll just have to find a way to keep warm as this one is outside.
